Part of the World Project. One country, one evolving collection of places, experiences, photographs, and memories.

My experience

I traveled through Brazil on two extended journeys, studying Portuguese and experiencing very different regions. I spent substantial time in Florianópolis and also explored destinations in northeastern and southern Brazil.

These photographs appeared on my website before I began organizing the World Project country pages. I am reusing the original images and their existing location labels while I work through my larger photo collection.

Two Brazilian journeys in 2019

During my first extended trip to Brazil in 2019, I spent substantial time in Florianópolis, including Barra da Lagoa, while studying Portuguese. Blumenau was another stop from those travels. Staying in one area for a while gave me a very different experience from racing through a list of destinations.

A later journey took me through João Pessoa, Porto de Galinhas and Maceió before returning to Florianópolis. Salvador and Foz do Iguaçu are also part of my Brazilian travels, although I am still sorting out how those stops fit into the two journeys. Together, the trips lasted roughly four months.

That distinction matters when I write about a place. I can remember a country and its cities vividly without yet knowing the exact date of every bus ride or beach visit. The images will help me tell the individual stories without pretending to have a perfectly reconstructed itinerary.

Photographs and future chapters

I’m gradually working through my personal photo and video archive to add more of the experiences behind this destination. This is a living page, not a finished guide.
