Sal and Santa Maria: My Cabo Verde Journey

In October 2024, my travels took me to Cabo Verde, off the west coast of Africa. I spent time on the island of Sal, including Santa Maria. It was another reminder that the places between familiar regions of the world have their own stories and deserve more than a passing mention on a map.

An Atlantic island chapter

Sal was a very different setting from the European cities in which I had spent so much time living and traveling. Visiting an island also brings a different sense of geography: distances, coastline, weather and the rhythm of daily life all become part of how you remember a place.

Santa Maria

Santa Maria is one of the principal places I want to feature in this chapter. My photographs from the island will eventually help show more of what I experienced, beyond the standard images that appear in resort advertisements or general destination guides.

More than a country count

Cabo Verde represents one destination in my overall count, but that number says very little about the experience itself. The World Project is meant to give countries like this room for personal stories, local details and the memories that stay with me. This is the opening version of that account.
